Book Summary

In the winter of Florence, 2023, Lorenzo Mustafa — of Palestinian and Italian blood — falls in love with a Venetian woman named Isabella Loredan as they become entangled in riots for Palestine. Their love deepens as the holocaust in Gaza rages without ceasing, and together they turn toward vigilante resistance; yet Isabella begins to see a darkness gathering behind Lorenzo's eyes.

When his family in Gaza falls silent — no call, no word, no sign of life — Lorenzo decides to go find them. Isabella knows what Gaza has become: a place of starvation, of targeted killing, of near-impossible survival. She knows what desperation does to a man who has already begun to darken.

Before he departs she asks of him one favor, for his sake:
"If you make it into Gaza," she says, holding his face in her hands, "do not join Hamas."
